Youth Curling

Burlington Curling Club is excited to offer youth programming to engage kids in the sport of Curling! We have 2 different programs available based on age. Our Little Rock program is for kids aged 9-12 and our Junior program is for youth aged 13-19.

Curling season at BCC starts immediately following Thanksgiving and continues through to the end of March/early April with a break at Christmas & New Years.

LITTLE ROCKS

Ages 9-12

About: This introductory program engages kids in the sport of curling and begins to teach them the basics of the game. Each week there are volunteer coaches to help provide on and off-ice instruction to the kids. At the start of the season there is lots of time spent on instruction and teaching the basics of the game. This includes: safety, moving on the ice, sweeping, delivering a stone, rules, and etiquette. As the season progresses and the kids have developed the necessary skills to play a game, there will be more time spent on playing games. There are 40 spots in the program each year.

When: Tuesdays, 4:50pm – 6:30pm

Experience Required: None.

Equipment Needed:   A clean pair of rubber-soled shoes

Warm clothing with a bit of stretch to it

                                     Gloves/Mitts

Helmets are required for all kids 12 & under.

Equipment Provided: Brooms

                                     Sliding Tape

                                     2 Grippers

Try it out: The first 2 weeks of lessons are open for kids to attend to try out the sport and decide if they want to register. These 2 lessons are free but sign up is required ahead of time as spaces are limited.

Other Curling Opportunities: We also work with other clubs in the area to provide opportunities for kids to participate in bonspiels (curling tournaments). This gives the kids an opportunity to go out and curl against kids from other clubs; providing opportunities to meet new friends, socialize, and represent the BCC within the local area. Bonspiels are usually a 1-day event that would typically feature 2 games, with lunch between games, followed by snacks and prizes after the 2nd game. These events usually run on Saturday or Sunday from approximately 8:00am – 4:00pm. There is an additional cost for bonspiels; it depends on the host club, but they are usually around $35-$40 per child.

JUNIORS

Ages 13-19

About: This is an introductory and intermediate program that continues kids’ development in the sport of Curling. While it helps if kids started in our Little Rocks program, it is not a necessary requirement to be part of the Junior program.

Each week there are volunteer coaches to help provide on and off-ice instruction to the kids. The coaches spend time continuing to develop and improve upon skills necessary to play full games, including development of game strategies. Each week the time is split between skill development and game play.
