Burlington, ON – On Thursday, the team at Burlington Curling Club met to celebrate $100,700 in funding the Club received through two grants from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) to help them rebuild and recover from the impacts of COVID-19.
"I am happy that the Burlington Curling Club has been the recipient of two grants through the Ontario Trillium Foundation," said Natalie Pierre, MPP for Burlington. "This funding supported improvements on and off the ice, promoting curling, sport and recreation in Burlington, now and in the future."
The $71,700 Community Building Fund – Capital stream grant, awarded in December of 2021, was used to replace the 70 year-old building’s aging boiler system with gas heaters and upgraded controls and distrubtion for an air conditioning system. With the installation of a modern HVAC system and air conditioning, the club will be able to be used during the summer months as an affordable event space for the community. Prior to the installation of this system the club was unusable in the summer months because of the high heat and humidity in the building.
Meanwhile, the $29,000 Resilient Communities fund grant, award in March of 2022 over 12 months, allowed the Club to enhance safety and extend the life of the building by replacing the air circulation system and upgrading the brine pump.
Together, these investments by the OTF will continue to give people in the community a social hub and access to recreational and competitive curling programs and events at the Club for years to come.
"The impact of this Ontario Trillium Foundation grant is profound for our club,” said Cory McLaughlin, General Manager of the Burlington Curling Club. “This grant has allowed needed renovations to be made. Our lounge is now air conditioned, which means it can be used in thesummer and the new make-up air unit allows all of the air in our lounge to be replaced with fresh air every 9 minutes; something that is very important as we all continue to navigate our way through the Covid-19 pandemic. We also want to congratulate the Ontario Trillium Foundation on 40 years of granting and building healthy and vibrant communities across the province.”
The Burlington Curling Club is committed to committed to providing a social hub and curling programming to the Burlington Community. If you wish to enquire about getting involved in curling or hosting an event, please visit the website at www.burlcurl.com.
